Yang Xiong, born in Nov 1953, is a male ethnic Han from Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. He obtained a master's degree in economics from the graduate school of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in July 1985. He is a senior economist.

He is currently deputy secretary of CPC Shanghai Municipal Committee, acting mayor of Shanghai and secretary of the Leading Party Members' Group of Shanghai municipal government.

Previous professinal life in Shanghai

Yang has spent his entire professional life in Shanghai since 1985. He has extensive experience at government departments and State-owned enterprises in Shanghai.

He started his career as deputy head of a division at the municipality's economic research center. He also served at the municipal planning committee in Shanghai, a predecessor of the city's development and reform commission, which oversees economic development in the municipality.

Yang was later appointed chairman of the board of Shanghai Information Investment and chairman of the board of Shanghai Airlines.

He became the deputy secretary-general of the Shanghai municipal government in Feb 2001 and was elected deputy mayor in Feb 2003. He became a member of the Standing Committee of CPC Shanghai Municipal Committee in May 2007. In Jan 2008 he became executive vice mayor of Shanghai.

As executive vice mayor, he took charge of various sections including development and reform, planning, population management, statistics, commodity prices and social stability.

During the World Expo in 2010, he served as executive deputy director of the Shanghai World Expo Executive Committee and took part in preparations both at the World Expo site and across the city.

New portfolio: acting mayor and deputy Party chief of Shanghai

Yang Xiong was promoted to acting mayor of Shanghai at a session of the city's top legislature ― the Standing Committee of the Shanghai Municipal People's Congress on Wednesday, Dec 26, 2012. The session also accepted the resignation of Han Zheng as mayor. Han was appointed Party chief of the city on Nov 20, 2012.

The new mayor will be elected at the first session of the next municipal people's congress which will run from Jan 27 to Feb 2, 2013.

Yang was appointed deputy Party secretary of Shanghai Friday, Dec 21, 2012.
